Process parameters influence in additive manufacturing

2016

Additive manufacturing is a rapidly expanding technology. It allows the creation of very complex 3D objects by adding layers of material, in spite of the traditional production systems based on the removal of material. The development of additive technology has produced initially a generation of additive manufacturing techniques restricted to industrial applications, but their extraordinary degree of innovation has allowed the spreading of household systems. Nowadays, the most common domestic systems produce 3D parts through a fused deposition modeling process. Such systems have low productivity and make, usually, objects with no high accuracy and with unreliable mechanical properties. Thes…

Single Point Incremental Forming: analysis of sustainability of the process through an experimental approach

2013

In literature, manufacturing processes have been studied with different approaches, but a lack of knowledge on the analysis of the energy required is still present. The aim of this paper is to carry out energy analysis on Single Point Incremental Forming process. Accordingly, a wide experimental investigation was executed by taking into account different process parameters (i.e. tool depth step, punch velocity and product shape). The total energy consumption was monitored during all the experiments and properly weighted with respect to the deformation energy, required to execute the process. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out to highlight the conditions which allow to save energy r…

Improving Of The Productivity And The Quality Of A Manufacturing Robotized Cell For Mig/Mag Welding

2007

During the last years, globalization and the necessity to reduce production costs have pushed industry to employ more and more manufacturing robotized cells. This trend has been assimilated by arc welding too. The use of robotic systems allows to increase the performance of productive systems by means of reduction in lead-time, reproducibility of processes and increase in quality. However, process automation needs pre-scheduling of manufacturing cell movements and also a setup of different welding parameters, such as power provided by the welding generator, arc length and robot speed, all of which allows to get a joint without defects. An online scheduling of robotic systems brings certainl…

Study of the microstructure and efficiency of YSZ-SPS finely structured ceramic coatings

2018

Thanks to the using of liquid carrier, suspension plasma spray (SPS) enables the manufacture of finely structured coatings. As for conventional plasma spraying (APS), the microstructures of SPS coatings can be tailored by controlling the spray conditions. However, SPS is more complicated than APS due to its number of modifiable parameters. This thesis aims to provide a more fundamental understanding of the relationship between SPS process parameters and the properties of YSZ coatings by identifying generic models based on the use of mathematical statistical methods for the study of influence and sensitivity of the individual parameters.Systematic experiments were carried out to study the inf…

An experimental campaign to investigate sustainability issues in Single Point Incremental Forming processes

2012

Sustainability issues are crucial topics in manufacturing and the environmental burdens reduction for processes is highly requested. In particular, the environmental sustainability evaluation for sheet metal forming processes is an widely investigated topic since there is still a lack of knowledge on modeling issues. The main tasks are related to a more efficient materials use and to energy savings. Moreover, forming technologies environmental impacts are essentially process-dependent. A deep analysis of the cause-effect linkages (between process and material parameters and energy consumption, for instance), within each process, would be necessary to properly model environmental impacts and…

Outlining the Limits of Friction Stir Consolidation as Used as an Aluminum Alloys Recycling Approach

2021

Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a solid-state process that recycles metal scraps economically and eco-friendly compared to the conventional melting method. The process parameters especially processing time and rotational speed, have a crucial role in achieving a sound disc during FSC. The current study answers the research question of how far these process parameters can be effective when the mass of chips to be recycled increases. In specific, an experimental setup was analyzed that was previously identified as challenging for recycling 20 g chips of aluminum alloy AA 2024-O. Rotational speed was set doubled, and processing time was increased up to 1.5 times of their initial values. T…
